  1. A society in which most people have money
  2. left over after satisfying their basic needs
  3. such as food and shelter. They are then able
  4. to decide how to spend their excess
  5. (`disposable') income, and become
  6. `consumers'. The term was popularized by the
  7. US economist John Kenneth Galbraith.
  8. Galbraith used the term to describe the
  9. Western industrialized nations, particularly
  10. the USA, in his book The Affluent Society
  11. 1958, in which he advocated using more of the
  12. nation's wealth for public spending and less
  13. for private consumption.
